ABT1 - July 10, 2021
TO ENTER THE EVENT:
The Alberta Sprint Racing Canoe Association (ASRCA) serves as the provincial governing body to promote and develop the sport of Sprint Canoe/Kayak in Alberta.
PURPOSE
On July 10th the ASRCA will hold the first of two Alberta Trials events (ABT1 & ABT2) to be held in 2021. The ABT1 Trials purpose is to Identify the current pool of provincial sprint canoe-kayak competitors and assess performance-level.
Based on performance results, ASRCA will:
1. Produce Discipline and Overall athlete ranking lists as outlined in Section E.
2. Utilize results to identify athletes for provincial initiatives.
3. Nominate 2021 (2022) Canada Summer Games, eligible athletes, to attend a training opportunity on July 23 to 25, 2021 as outlined in Section F.
ABT2 will take place on October 2, 2021 and based on the results, ASRCA will reset ranking lists and performance assessments.

B) GENERAL NOTES
- Time trial entries are open to athletes registered and in good standing with a ASRCA member club; and registered with status of ‘competitive’ with Canoe Kayak Canada.
- Athletes may enter canoe or kayak disciplines but not both.
- Non-adjusted performance time will be used for ranking and assessment.
- Boat weight will be monitored and must meet regulations.
- Standard Canoe Kayak Canada start procedures will be used with the exception of one false start being allowed. In the case of a false start, one failed attempt to complete the course will be recorded.
- Start order will be by discipline and by age within discipline; oldest first then younger in order. Discipline start order will be: 1st Men Kayak, 2nd Men Canoe, 3rd Women Kayak and 4th Women Canoe.
- 200m time Trials will be completed prior to 2000m Time Trials.
- In the case that the competitor attempts but cannot complete the course while making a legitimate good-faith effort, a second attempt will be permitted; the athlete’s 2nd attempt will take place in the next available start position (last in line). No further considerations for illness, equipment failure or other will be given.
- In the case where the here-in outlined process cannot occur, ASRCA reserves the right to modify, cancel or replace procedures to meet its objectives.
- ASRCA may utilize the resulting athlete performance rankings to identify individuals or a specific group(s) for targeted provincial support.
- Note: Participation in ABT1 will NOT influence selection to the 2022 Canada Summer Games.
C) COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS
- All participants are required to follow Alberta Health Guidelines. https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx
- Specific guidelines may include maintaining a 2m physical distance, disinfection of shared equipment between use, no shared food, washroom and hand sanitizing protocols.
D) PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT & WITHIN DISCIPLINE RANKING
- ASRCA will compile discipline and age specific performance lists by:
- Overall discipline ranking lists (Canoe Men, Kayak Men, Canoe Women, Kayak Women)
- Age-class discipline ranking lists (U14, U16, U18, U21, Senior)
- Ranking points will be assigned based on combined 2000m and 200m performance time with equal weighting of each distance.
- Points will be applied independently to each distance according to performance time with the lowest time scoring 1 point, 2nd lowest - 2 points, 3rd lowest - 3 points, and so on.
- The 200m and 2000m rank points will be added to establish a combined distance rank score. Athletes will be ranked according to the combined score, with the lowest score representing the best rank.
- Performance results at both distances are required for calculation of rank. Completion of one event only will not qualify a paddler for assessment or ranking.
- Where two (2) Athletes have a tied points total, the athlete who achieves the best placing in the 2000m distance will be ranked higher.
E) PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT & OVERALL RANKING
- Whereas the within discipline ranking is confined to paddlers of the same discipline, i.e., men kayak, women canoe etc., the overall ranking allows for the assessment of athlete performance across all disciplines.
- The overall ranking may be used if identification of the next-ranked paddler (regardless of discipline) is required.
- Overall ranking uses the combined 2000m and 200m performance times, with both distances weighted equally and presented as a percentage of the discipline-specific 200m World Podium Time (PT200). See Appendix A.

F) SELECTION CRITERIA FOR PRE-CANADA GAMES TEAM TRAINING OPPORTUNITY (July 23-25)
- ASRCA will nominate 2021 Canada Summer Games, eligible athletes, to attend a training opportunity on July 23 to 25 (location to be determined). Athletes must be a minimum of 14 years of age on July 23rd, 2021.
- The top 12 eligible ranked athletes will be nominated from the discipline rank lists. Nominations will be in the following order: 1stin 2000m, 1st in 200m, 2nd in 2000m, 2nd in 200m and continuing in the sequence.
- Suppose an athlete ranks among the top 4 in both distances; the athlete will be nominated from the 2000m rank list and be removed from the 200m list, thus advancing lower-ranked 200m athletes.
- If athlete(s) declines nomination, the next ranked athlete(s) will receive a nomination.
G) SELECTION PANEL and AUTHORITY
- Selection Panel members shall be approved by the ASRCA President with the Technical Director serving as chair. The Technical Director (TD) will appoint panel members.
- The Technical Director may terminate the appointment of any Selection Panel member or appoint additional member(s) if they consider it appropriate to do so. The TD may direct any member of the Selection Panel to vacate the relevant Selection Panel for such period as the TD considers appropriate where the TD considers, in their sole discretion, the Selection panel member has an association with an athlete which may give rise to a question of bias or conflict of interest in the selection process. See ASRCA conflict of Interest Policy.
- The ASRCA President may terminate the appointment of the TD from the Selection Panel if they consider it appropriate to do so. In this case, the President will appoint a replacement, or if appropriate, themselves as the chair of the Selection Panel.
- The ASRCA Excellence Lead in consultation with the Provincial Coach, under the direction of the Technical Director, is responsible for the implementation and procedures in this document.
- The Selection Panel will recommend nominations to the ASRCA board for final approval.
H) ATHLETE and COACH RESPONSIBILITY

- In any case that incorrect or conflicting information is communicated, the details contained in the most recent time stamped PDF document posted to this site will be considered correct.
I) SELECTION CRITERIA
- The selection criteria are developed by the EL following feedback from coaches, athletes and the ASRCA community, the final Selection Criteria is then forwarded to the TD and Selection Committee for review and ratification. The TD then forwards these criteria to the ASRCA Board for approval.
- The criteria to be applied by the Selection Panel for the applicable team is that set out in the relevant Selection Criteria.
J) EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES
- These criteria are intended to apply where fair conditions exist, but situations may arise where unforeseen circumstances or circumstances beyond ASRCA's control do not allow selection to take place in a fair manner or in the best interests of the priorities and general principles for selection as indicated in these criteria; or do not allow the procedure for nomination as described in this document to be applied.
- In the event of such unforeseen circumstances the TD and the selection panel will, in consultation with the appropriate parties, determine if the circumstances justify an alternative process.
K) APPEAL POLICY
- ASRCA utilizes the Canoe Kayak Canada Appeal Policy.
- Appeals of ASRCA decisions may be pursued only through the ASRCA’s Appeals Policy on the policy webpage of the ASRCA website.
- Athletes shall only be permitted to appeal when they are directly affected by a decision. As such, any athlete who was not being considered for a crew/team/pool shall not have the right to appeal a selection decision.
