A)  Overarching Objectives:

Alberta Sprint Racing Canoe Association (ASRCA) serves as the provincial governing body to promote and develop the sport of Sprint Canoe/Kayak in Alberta. Given the lack of a ‘typical’ 2020 competitions season, to assess and identify the current pool of provincial sprint canoe-kayak competitors, ASRCA offers two late season performance assessment opportunities.

  • Format --  Individual Time Trials (200m & 2000m)
  • Location & Date:  Calgary Canoe Club - August 29, 2020; Cardif Trout Pond – August 30, 2020
  • Date --  August 29, 2020 (Calgary) and August 30, 2020 (Edmonton)
  • Start Times -- 10:30AM start (200m) & 1:00PM (2000m)
  • Athletes -- Members of ASRCA clubs and in good standing
  • Registration online at www.asrca.com, Deadline 8:30AM day of event.
  • Fee -- No Event Fee

B)  General Notes

  1. This is NOT a Club or Team based but open to individual paddlers within the ASRCA system.
  2. Paddlers may take part in only one of the Calgary or Edmonton Assessment Events.
  3. Participation will NOT influence selection to the 2021 Canada Summer Games.
  4. Non-adjusted performance time used for ranking and assessment.
  5. No special considerations for illness, equipment failure or other.
  6. In the case where the here-in outlined process cannot occur, ASRCA reserves the right to modify, cancel or replace procedures to meet the overarching objectives.
  7. ASRCA may utilize assessment results to identify individuals or a specific group(s) for targeted provincial support.

C) Covid-19 Considerations

  1. Regardless of cohort status, all paddlers are expected to follow Alberta Health Guidelines. https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx
  2. Specific guidelines include maintaining a 2m physical distance, disinfection of shared equipment between use, no shared food. Washroom protocol and hand sanitizing will be reinforced

D) Pool Identification - discipline rank

  1. ASRCA will calculate overall, discipline and age specific performance ranking lists:
    • Discipline ranking lists (Canoe Men, Kayak Men, Canoe Women, Kayak Women)
    • Within discipline age ranking list (U14, U16, U18, U21, Senior)
  2. Ranking established based on combined 2000m and 200m performance with equal weighting to each distance.
  3. Performance times from both distances are required for the presentation of results. Completion of one event only will not qualify a paddler for assessment or ranking.

D)  Pool Identification - overall rank (across discipline)

  1. The overall ranking uses combined time, relative to the discipline-specific 200m Podium Time (PT200). *PT200 calculation table attached as Appendix A
  1. Final overall ranking will be presented as % PT200. Example of the overall cross-discipline ranking calculation below.

E)  K4 & C4 Skills Camp (Event Planning in Progress)

  1. ASRCA will nominate 2021 Canada Summer Games, eligible athletes, to attend a K4 & C4 training opportunity to be held November 7-14, in Fort Langley, BC. Athletes must be a minimum of 14 years of age on November 7th, 2020.
  2. Nominations to attend the camp will be made based on the combined distance (2000m and 200m) discipline ranking lists. Athletes ranked among the top 12 of their specific discipline will be considered eligible.
  3. Of the top 12 ranked athletes, a minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 athletes may be nominated. From the discipline rank lists, four athletes from the 2000m and the 200m may be nominated. Nominations will be in the following order: 1st in 2000m, 1st in 200m, 2nd in 2000m, 2nd in 200m and continuing in the sequence.
  4. Suppose an athlete ranks among the top 4 in both distances; the athlete will be nominated from the 2000m rank list and be removed from the 200m list, thus advancing lower-ranked 200m athletes.
  5. If athlete(s) declines nomination, the next ranked athlete(s) will receive a nomination. Regardless, nominations will not go to athletes outside the initially ranked top 12 discipline list.
  6. Final team size determined based on the intent to fill one or two complete crews each of men and women. The maximum team size is 8 for each discipline and 32 total of:
  • 8 kayak women (4 or 8)
  • 8 canoe women (2 or 4 left + 2 or 4 right)
  • 8 kayak men (4 or 8)
  • 8 canoe men (2 or 4 left + 2 or 4 right)
  • 32 = maximum team size
